Tenkara fly fishing
A few of my pals are into fly fishing and specifically into a minimal version called tenkara. What drew me to it was how simple it was. All you needed was a rod, a line, and a fly. This simplicity made it easier to learn and is also very affordable. You can unpack and get fishing in under a minute.
With a promo code (norcaltenkara for Tenkara Rod Co) I was able to get a rod and kit for around $160 and was ready to hit the rivers looking for fish. Other than that, I got a simple pack and a few additional supplies. I was ready to fish.
My pack breakdown:
Tenkara Rod Co Beartooth rod and package:
Rio 5x or 6x tippet
Line and spool
Flies in a container
One of the things I love about tenkara is that it naturally aligns with remote hiking. It is designed for smaller mountain streams and most traditional fly fishermen are looking for bigger fish in bigger waters. Most of the time I don’t see very many folks out in the woods and that is a big part of the draw for me.
Additionally, it is very easy to teach new people. Most of my trips I bring one of my daughters or a friend that doesn't fly fish often.
